Are you ready for a reset?

A garage reset is the process of decluttering and organizing your garage in preparation for the changing seasons. This is especially important when transitioning from summer sports and outdoor activities to fall and all of the new gear a new season brings. By taking the time to reset and refresh your garage each season, you can keep it clean and organized, making it easier to find what you need and making your life more convenient.

By following our tips, you can create a clean and organized garage that you'll be proud of.

Assessment and Planning

Let’s get started! You want to begin by setting aside a substantial amount of time, possibly a full day or a whole weekend to complete this task. Make it a collaborative effort and involve family and friends to expedite the process and keep it fun.

Categorize the items into three distinct groups: those to keep, those to donate or sell, and those to throw away. Lay them out on designated tarps or mark off sections of your driveway accordingly. Typical types of items you want to remove include outgrown toys, permanently damaged belongings, expired household chemicals (needing proper disposal), and anything you haven't used for over two years. Arrange for donations or plan a yard sale to get rid of unwanted items.

Organize the belongings you intend to keep into broad classifications, like sports equipment or hand tools, and store them in well-labeled cardboard boxes or, preferably, transparent, stackable plastic containers for easy retrieval later. Now it’s time to move on to removing any dirt or debris.

Removing Sand and Rocks

Any seasonal reset needs to involve cleaning your garage floors and removing the debris from summer sports, beach trips, and more.

Our recommendations for doing this efficiently:

  1. Use a shop vacuum to clean up any remaining sand and rocks.
  2. If there are any stubborn spots, use a pressure washer to remove them.
  3. Be sure to wear protective gear, such as goggles and gloves, while cleaning to avoid injury.

Safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Wear goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and skin from flying debris.
  • Be careful not to slip or trip on sand, rocks, or wet spots.
  • If you are using a pressure washer, be sure to keep a safe distance from the floor to avoid damaging it.

Dealing with Sports Gear

Organizing and storing sports equipment like bicycles, surfboards, and beach toys can get overwhelming when the seasons are changing. Having a storage plan in place that fits all of your gear and seasonal needs can be a lifesaver and help avoid garage chaos.

Using wall-mounted racks, shelves, and hooks to keep equipment off the floor and out of the way can keep you organized all season long. Be sure to check out these tips to create a successful storage plan.

  • Label each storage area so you know where everything is.
  • Use bins or baskets to store smaller items.
  • Rotate your equipment so you're using it regularly and not letting it get old and dusty.
  • Declutter and donate items you no longer use.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Performing regular maintenance can keep your garage organized and tidy, saving you time and frustration when you are trying to find specific equipment or get ready in a hurry.

Keep your garage clean by rotating through these basic chores:

  • Floors: Sweep and mop the floor regularly to remove dirt, dust, and debris. If there are any spills or stains, clean them up immediately with a mild detergent and water. You can also use a steam cleaner to deep clean the floor.
  • Walls: Wipe down the walls with a damp cloth to remove dust and cobwebs. If there are any stains, clean them up with a mild detergent and water. You can also paint the walls to give them a fresh new look.
  • Shelving: Dust the shelves regularly to remove dust and cobwebs. If there are any spills or stains, clean them up immediately with a mild detergent and water. You can also line the shelves with shelf paper to protect them from dirt and grime.

Additionally, a concrete coated garage floor is a great way to make your garage a more functional space and keep it clean no matter the mess. Here are some of the benefits of having a coated floor:

  • Durability: Concrete is a very strong material, but it can be damaged by oil, grease, and other spills. A coating will protect your floor from these hazards and make it much easier to clean.
  • Easy to clean: A coated floor is very easy to clean. Simply sweep or vacuum up any dirt or debris, and then wipe down the floor with a damp mop. You can even use a pressure washer to clean a coated floor, which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas.
  • Longevity: A coated floor will last for many years, even with regular use. This is because the coating protects the concrete from the elements and from wear and tear.
  • Aesthetic appeal: A coated floor can add a touch of style to your garage. There are many different colors and finishes to choose from, so you can find the perfect one to match your décor.
